It may be little progress but it is important progress. That oil cooler must have cost a pretty penny to have made, even the 3d prototype would be expensive to make.
Love the throwaway comment of 'managed to pick up some original shocks and some works items' I assume you didn't have to trade a kidney for those ;D
Great to read an update, this is going to be a special bike when completed.

Hi Dave,

The details really do take time for sure. The 3D prototype cost less than £2 in materials and was printed on a budget printer so actually a super cost effective way of producing a space model for checking.

No kidneys were part of the deal, the shocks are from a good friend in the UK who I have helped out this year with a few other things and the original pipe came from the states following an estate sale - I had to buy quite a lot of spares that I didnt want in order to scoop it!

Cheers,
CR21

Another piece of this jigsaw of a build that has been ticking over is the front fairing mount, I managed to borrow an original HRC part to copy, this is super wonky and pretty poorly made, to the point that it is actually quite hard to replicate something that is that bad!

I totally get that this part was just made for racing, but usually the HRC quality is quite good...

Original in black, prototype in bare steel:

I have modelled up the rubber parts in CAD which I will print or cast in TPU and will bond to my the mount when complete:

Some great work there. Nothing very refined about the original! 😳

Thanks Johnny - indeed it looks like it was made in a bit of a hurry - a brilliant reference though.

A small update!

Hubs painted, and off being built. It was quite hard to find a painter who understood how I wanted them doing, as key areas needed masking, and other areas I wanted no prep/minimal primer on to show the cast finish as per the originals.

On the hub project I could not resist having the shoes cast (as the originals) so went down this rabbithole as well. I am currently having the controls arms polished as per the originals. I also had the sprocket anodised in clear which has finished it nicely.

The original rims had text stamped into the flange so I replicated the text and had it etched onto the rims:

These are due to be drilled, laced up, trued and with fresh rubber on in the next week or so.

3D printed fairing rubbers in TPU. These will be bonded on after paint - like the originals:

Extremely nice work and final product.

I'd call it a "recreation" rather than repro as some may consider it. With method and detail being important in that process to step through what is much of the original work again in creating this.

A fine example of engineering competence, and producing something from a very interesting era of racing brakes.

My compliments, on such an interesting brake assembly too.

Managed to borrow an original CR750 chinpad, 3D scanned it, reverse engineered it in CAD and will cast some in a low shore hardness polyurethane under a vacuum. The depression in my tank wont fit the original pad so I will plan to modify this to suit.

Also - collecting the wheels on Tuesday  8) Had the rear brake control arms polished as per the originals:

Hi Dave, these parts were polished by a good friend of mine, aside from a couple of fasteners there is not any chrome on this bike.

Wasn’t me who polished the parts btw 😀😀 in case someone was thinking it looks like my work. Very nice, wheels look awesome and so does everything else.

Nice work as usual.

Stunning work, very impressive and inspiring! Yes was thinking you’ve got someone else competing to become “bling master”! 😂
On a serious note hope you are getting back to doing some of the things you enjoy doing Ken.👍

I’ll do an update on my condition on a more appropriate thread Johnny as I don’t want to detract from the stunning work CR21 is doing here. Suffice to say whoever did that polishing has my utmost respect, I doubt I could better it tbh. No work on my restoration now for over a year, still stalled due to my illness.

The polisher is a good friend of mine - has done a few parts for my Yamahas - beautiful work!

Unfortunately the rear needs to be built back up with a new rim as the builder marked it really badly during assembly! The company have agreed to put this right. A little bit of a shame, but looking forward to having it back after all of this work/time  ;D
