Sorry I know I probably sound a git daft here but by changing to a solid state rectifier dose that mean you can get rid of the old rectifier and regulator?

  yes,it just plugs in,and the cables do as well

Is it one of those things you should do anyway or leave till the old stuff stops working?

If it int broke, don't fix it. My 40 year old one is still regulating away like it's supposed to.
