I pull the basket out with just my hands, the basket can snag up on the kick start teeth, so turn the kick spline as you pull. Much easier to put the plates on the inner (as pic 1) as at least you know that they are lined up.

I will take out (again..) the whole clutch and put the basket into de-ruster to make sure, everything is sliding free.
I bought new clutch metal plates but I have the impression, they are a bit tight (after market stuff).

Waht is the "kick spline"?
