Broken bolts in cylinder head....help!!

well....not happy today..while putting the engine back together I broke 2 bolts in the cilinder head....

I was doing it with the torque wrench but without noticing it while I was doing the bolts my hand was turning the thing at the end of the torque wrench, increasing the torque.

So...when I notice it was 2 late..the bolts snapped....what do to now?
Can it be repaired'
do I have to buy that whole part new?
or can I throw everything in the bin?

As you can see it?s the 2 bolts more to the left...this is after I?ve taken all the other parts out again...



I can't believe how I could be so stupid..I do everything with lots of care...and then this happens!!!

I've also found this on ebay...my bike is from 1976, so it's a K6, do you think this will be ok if I buy it?
Or can I repair the broken ones?

DON'T PANIC

It's the studs for the cam towers, right?

First Job get yourself down to Halfords, or some other auto DIY shop and see if you can get a stud extractor. It should remove the studs easily, it works like mole grips, but fits on a socket wrench.

I have a spare head here, don't know what year, but if I can get the studs out cleanly I'll send them to you.

:blush: PS. I did the same thing the first time I used a torque  wrench, only I stretched 4 cylinder studs before, and snapped a fifth before I realised what I was doing wrong:P

I tought they were welded in the cylinder head...humm...I'm more happy now than I was yesterday...pfffff....

I'm going to try to take them out tonight when I get home...

So..it means that it has 2 threads?one that goes into the cylinder head and the other one where the nut goes on top?

SammyB is right, they are just studs, here is one I took out earlier, I used two nuts locked together, but I don't think you'll have enough thread.



They shouldn't be that tight, but if you have a problem gently warm the head and use either a stud extractor or a pair of mole grips.

hoo..that's great!

I'm so relief now..I had a lot of work cleaning the valves and being very carefull with everything and this happened...and I tought I would need a new cylinder head...

I don't use the torque wrench for the smaller bolts,I bought one from Halfords but found the \"click action\" was so soft low down, that I missed it.

For small stuff, I use the 1/8th turn method, you tightnen up with as normal, then give it an extra 1/8th of a turn to tighten it up.

To remove a half snapped stud or bolt, you need a stud extractor. something like this

Which bolt have you snapped?, one of the ones holding the cam carriers down

To get that out your going to have to take the cam assembly off again.

As I said before, your options are limited:-
Stud extractor, Mole grips, an engineering company to try and remove it or a onother head.

I have a head, but it has no valves,

Is that engine still in the frame?  If so I didn't think you could remove the camcover without dropping the engine
