Very interesting Menno, so my K1's tank went through several layers at the factory - is it normal for 4 top coats to be applied?

Hello Andrew, no it isn't.
I have seen a tank painted twice before leaving the factory but never four times.

Having 4 top layers means the underlaying three layers were not ok.
If it would be possible to remove layer by layer it would be possible to see where and what kind of errors were made.
But your tank is at the cleaners anyway so that will remain unknown.

All that paint has a plus side, maximum protection for the exterior from rust!

Hi Folks,

Menno has almost finished my tankset which has had the dents repaired and been blasted inside and out and that revealed a small hole around the tank neck (top edge) which had been patched up with resin. Menno repaired the hole with metal and has painted the tankset in its original Candy Ruby Red, including hand painting the strips and also recommended the tank was lined as an extra safeguard - photos below of the excellent work so far.  I'm now eagerly waiting for the finished paint set to arrive and the studio photos of the finished job.

Sadly, since sending the tank etc to Menno in April/May and returning from holiday on the 26 June I had a serious stroke on Friday 28 June and spent 7 days in hospital. I am now recovering at home with the excellent help of the Acute Stroke Team from Frimley Park Hospital, Camberley - thank god for the NHS who were and are being absolutely fantastic!   However, whilst I'm making a good and steady recovery, I'll be surrendering my driving licence to the DVLA for at least a year. Luckily, I have a very good friend who will ride my 76 Z900 and the K1 when it's back together to keep their wheels turning.

Sorry to hear the news, keep on your consultants good side and do exactly what he sez, you will need his help with DVLA in the future, NEVER give up with the Swansea numpties they  dont know their own rules and change them frequently.

Sorry to hear that news Andrew. Good to hear you are on the mend though.
When you get the tank back fit it on the bike and bring the whole thing into the living room to aid your recovery.

Thank you so much for your kind words, best wishes and support - all of which is very much and sincerely appreciated.

It’s never lucky to have a stroke, but if there is any luck to this then it’s the stroke was to the right side of my brain which affected my left peripheral vision, balance, cognitive processing and caused a number of post-stroke absence seizures of which the doctors and nursing staff say will heal over time with rest, rehabilitation and ongoing medication.  The outcome may have been very different if the stroke had been to the left side............
This has come as a complete shock - none of my close friends and family thought that I was a candidate for a stroke!  But who is?  Although my stroke wasn’t the classic ‘head on fire’ depicted in the TV ads, it was a slow burn, but my mistake was to ignore the feeling that something wasn’t right and to continue to think it would pass rather than go to hospital. So a hard lesson learned.
