Crankcase main bearing letters - doubting myself!

philward:
Got it Ken - thanks again. Just got to pay for the bludy things now! £15 each shell!

philward:
They are all B's - same as I seem to see scrawled on the inside of cases - oo-incidence?

I've got all B's on crankcase and 1,2,3 & 5 crankshaft journals are '2's' and no 4 journal is a '1' - is it normal to have an odd size amongst the other consistant sizes. Sorry to labour the pont, but want to make sure I'm not misreading the crank numbers leading to wrong bearing sizes.
Hence, I think from the manual, I need 4 Browns and 1 Green.
Cheers

Winterfield:
This is a timely thread, I'll be doing this shortly for my 400.

One thing that's bothering me: is it a safe assumption that the crank case stamped measurements are still accurate? Or is it better to measure?
What about the crankshaft - is safe to assume it's the same as it was stamped too?

philward:
Experts will be along shortly but in my opinion, the measuring tolerences and diferences between the different bearings are that small (.01mm), that I personally don't feel confident with the micrometers/calipers I have to get accurate readings. (to decide on the bearing size)
I have only build 6 (4 x750 and 2 x 900) engines and always used the case/crankshaft letters/numbers with good results and no longer term issues. I think most people use this method if completely changing shells (as opposed to measuring for wear to decide to change shells)
Over to the ex Honda mechanics!
