Now, if the challenge is to match the combine depth of the original fully assembled lower ball race, then I’d wager the correct shim is the 4mm job by supplied with the DS taper rollers.
I could have this completely wrong, though cos that’s my specialty.

I think you're right there regarding dimensions.
But it's complicated by the top taper bearing bearing thicker than the original ball race, hence the concern arises of threads left to complete assembly on the stem.
What it seems to need is to "pinch" enough height at the bottom, while still getting clearance for the fork to turn, which then leaves some small room for compensation at the top.
If you get the total stack height of both bearings together, then compare to original to give more complete picture.

Jamie thinks 4mm spacer is correct?

Ok,for those who need or would like to know.
For a 1977 550 F2, the taper roller set supplied by DS complete with thick spacer works perfectly. Thanks to Oddjob, Bryanj and Ted.
DS, apologies, how could I have doubted you.

If you read half way through this thread, you will not know if the bearings are good until you go to fit the headlight brackets. >>>

The only way i have found to fit these taper bearings correctly is, mill the seat on the inside of the head stock on the frame by 6mm and the taper cup sits lower and the gap for the headlight brackets is correct.
If not fitting OEM headlight brackets, you have to forget about the top yoke chrome washer as, there is not enough thread with the washer to hold the top nut safely

Agreed. Returning to Mr Honda’s original solution and loose ball races. When I’ve resolved the bottom yoke twist....
