This may be an urban myth but...

Open up each "link" of the spring with a flat bladed screwdriver and insert a penny. slip the "extended" spring over both retainers and then remove pennies with a pair of pliers.  ;D

I think this came from .net but I don't remember who...

Well Steve I am impressed. The spring thing worked a treat, only I used washers not rich enough to use pennies(spent all of them on my bike ;))
