Thanks for your logic! There was nothing about this bike when I bought it that suggested there there had been anyone competent near it, so many bodges and defects, that’s why I have to question everything I’m not sure about and rely on the good knowledge of the good people of this forum. Cheers!

Thanks found it via a link on a google search that took me back to the sohc site here to a post from 2016 - the Honda wiring colours list is usefull.
