Taper head bearings.
« on: March 13, 2022, 09:24:37 AM »
Just removed the old head bearing ball races from the frame. On the lower one there is a round spacer underneath the bearing, does this stay in when fitting taper roller bearings or do I need to get it out (see photo). Also, which taper bearing goes to the bottom, thick or thin. And where do the sealing washers go.

You know, I have done this a dozen times and I cant for the life of me remember how they go. Memory must be failing along with the rest of me. If it needs to come out, I need to do it quick before it goes for powder coating.

I assume the larger of the two bearings goes in the bottom then Bryan. Is that spacer there just for the original loose ball race then.

I might have misunderstood you is the spacer on the forks side - does it form part of a seal of some sort?
