Happy to report that today I have finally finished cleaning the Carbs with a couple of stripped bowl threads now Helicoiled.
Carbs back on the bike followed by the usual Rubics Cube Puzzle that is getting the air intake box back in the frame.  Spent a lot of time fitting the air filter box and battery box as well as a couple of inline filters to the carbs.

I've run out of energy but not enthusiasm for today so probably the weekend before I have her running again.  ;D ;D ;D

Hopefully you'll be up and away with it Ted.

The question you posed in discussion about jet size etc, after cleaning  .... it shouod be in the capability of the settings to cover that off with the screw in modulation.

I'll emphasise the point I was making, that with cleaning, any other impairment,  current fuel with or without Ethanol etc, then the "factoryy" set of X turns out, plus fraction  :) will unlikely be a defacto std, just a competent start point.

It should give two very divisive outcome. A no heat cylinder,  meaning no fuel flow in that jet almost certainly.  Or the opposite, in that you now have to turn that airscrew further out to get the setup required. The second scenario will define its wear etc by you recording the full amount of turns to get mixture in range. Really speaking, getting towards a verified three turns out would show just too much flow to be reasonably controlled by hardware in place  ..... that causing you to question the jet accuracy.

You can do a quick functional test just with putting carbs on without the airfilter etc to simply assess IF the idle system is both giving fuel (no cold cylinder) and can be "ranged" by turning the screw to observe response. It doesn't need full installation to check that aspect, should you run into problems, but if verification of function checks out, then complete the work to fully install induction system and go to final tuning.

Interesting info K2-K6, a tad too late in terms of fitting the air filters etc as they are in place.

I fired up the 500 about an hour ago - pleased to report it is running on all four cylinders again.

Only done the tentative burn test on the manifold with my fingers running pretty nicely with all four air screws set at 1.5 turns out (air screws are the drilled 500 type).
Packing in for today - planning to set the dynamic timing before I start assembling my newly painted petrol tank over the next few days.

Done quite a few things today, Petrol Tank Cap & Catch fitted to tank, new mounting rubbers in place. Chain guard fitted, Dynamic timing checked. At this rate it will be ready for a test ride soon.

Petrol tank now in place - not happy with the effort/wiggle  needed to release tank cap from the catch so some fine tunning needed.  Culprit seems to be paint on the tank cap & catch brackets. Improved things by greasing the catch itself and the bar/pin on the cap.

Ended up routing the two inline filters under the carbs as suggested by a member here - looks okay  - quite a tidy solution plus accessible.

Having a few days away at the weekend so no bike work until next week - it's pretty much done now just needs seat, badges fitting to tank & side panels plus some safety checks with my torque wrench.  I'm also going to ensure all my earth connections to the frame are good with powder coating removed so will be using my AVO meter to check for any voltage drops.

A shake down ride looks on the cards in the next couple of weeks provided domestic duties do not slow me down. I will post a photo when I have done the above.

Exciting news Ted! I would be interested to know how you go about testing the earth points as I am going to need to do the same at some point in the future. With the burnt out earth wiring in the loom I have it’s clear that even before I had the frame powder coated my bike had a problem.

My simplistic method might have no scientific basis, I will measure the voltage between the battery terminals then take measurements with the live at the battery then see if there is any voltage reduction when I earth the volt meter at various points including the end of the earth strap, at the coil earth, engine casing, headlamp shell earth points. Ideally I should be looking at any changes due to resistance in the earth circuit so might be more meaningful under load.

For safety reasons my brother helped me get the bike off the center stand as it was effectively stuck on the bike ramp - the stand  just slides along the ramp so it needed some effort to hold the centre stand firm on the base as I sat astride to bump it off the stand so as to speak. I need to work out a way to do this unassisted.
Mainly due to lack of space the 400 was then ridden onto the bike ramp and up on the center stand - with a tie down strap at the front through the steering gap.

A little bit of tweaking was needed as number two cylinder was a tad cooler - now running nicely on all four cylinders sufficiently well enough for a shake down run. Run today postponed due to cool weather, quite windy & a few spots of rain at lunchtime.
