Rear wheel lock ring LH threads as well as lock screws?
McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
Looking at the rear hub there are a couple of screws through two of the four holes where the key removal tool would fit.
Am I right in thinking I need to remove these first before the lock ring can be removed.
Not looking forwards to trying to get the two lock screws out - I'm assuming they are normal RH threads.rear wheel lock ring by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr

They're not screws Ted, the bearing retainer should have been knurledat one point which might mean you have to gently drill off the part thats been knurled over, couldnt think of the word (bashed with a drift to stop it coming un done).
The retaining ring sholuld then just unscrew. If you give it a good clean you'll see the direction arrow on the retainer. On my 550 it was an anti clockwise thread but dont know about the age and the circumstance of the your 500. Probably the same.
I might be wrong but that's what I found on mine aand you can see various if you sling the question into you tube it'll show you the norm.
There's heap on You tube showing how bad these can be, I found a bit of heat after soaking in penetrant for 24hrs and she was off. I did however buy a hub from a car boot sale only to get it home to find that the bearing retainer was hiding where some oaf had had a go with an angle grinder and more or less destryed the carrier and the threads. I only paid £5 for it so no great shame but I can only presume they were trying to wind it off and were winding it on!
There's a few threads about this also but go to You tube bud, all will become clear. I had exactly the same thought when I got to mine. I'm no expert as all will agree but they can be a bit of a tw*t to do so go careful and it should yeild for you mate.
McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
My 400 was peened over but this looks different - so what are the two screws for in two of the four holes where the removal tool fits?
I do not think the ring will turn with them in place.
Has it been modified by a PO?
Ill have to look again.

PEENED!!!!!!
thats the word I couldnt remember........doh!
No, not modified, thats exactly how mine was.they look like screws but arent, when you take the ring off it becomes clear. You should get the tooll in there with them as they are. I thought exactly the same when I saw mine. It was only through trawling through the net that it twigged.
Bryanj:
In the hole you see half retainer and half hub so it looks like a screw slot, but there is nothing in there and its def LH thread
