Oh, and this... http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,20039.msg178069.html#msg178069 Cost nothing.

This is wrong, it's done there as security for very significant and worthwhile engineering reasoning. The assembly subjected to high loading in BOTH directions with significant torque reversal under acceleration AND engine braking use.
This bearing (on most motorcycle design) is used to hold the wheel aligned laterally within the frame. Any failure here would let the wheel move and it can't move toward the chain. The direction will bring the hub into conflict with the brake shoe plate and lock the wheel if moving far enough.
Installed without proper security is a little like building a time bomb into it. Honda arranged it like that for good reasons of safety.
All things being equal, no it wouldn't come undone in general use. But would anyone want to be riding one if it did ?

thats the word I couldnt remember........doh!
No, not modified, thats exactly how mine was.they look like screws but arent, when you take the ring off it becomes clear. You should get the tooll in there with them as they are. I thought exactly the same when I saw mine. It was only through trawling through the net that it twigged.

To me, peening is spreading the head of a pin or rivet or similar.
The retaining rings are 'staked' with a centre punch to stop them rotating.
McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
We're probably talking semantics here - my 400 front lock ring was staked out in a full circle not at a few points. So to me it was peened whereas the rear lock ring was just staked out in four places.
