Make sure it isn't too cold - or it is too thick to flow .... and stir well

 Should I lacquer the patches after painting? If so, what do I use?

No - nothing on top of the paint .... and practice to apply the right amount with a very soft bristled brush ....... just enough so it flows but not too much to run :)
