Matt - if you can, try a cordless impact driver. My 18v ‘driver undoes nuts with ease; and negates a lot of the requirement to secure the opposite bit due the hi-freq impacting. Never fails to amaze / impress me…. it’s my go to with any seized nuts / bolts / screws.

Do you think they are better than air operated impact drivers?

Success! I decided that I should get something that could inflict a little more impact. So, my mini kango type sds drill was pressed into action with a pointed bit and voila! said nut is now off!
Inspecting the nut, the threads are not very good and measured different pitches around the the thread - this probably added to the 'tightness'. I tried a spare nut and that is a much better fit.

Now to make my M18 x 1.5 bolt to take the alternator bit off......

Thanks for any input  - it got me to think differently.
Matt

Well done Matt - I never thought of using an impact tool due the difficult in holding the shaft.

Well done Matt - I never thought of using an impact tool due the difficult in holding the shaft.

I made a dimple/locating hole first so the impact bit didn't slip around. Had to be a little careful as that particular bit had never been used before and it was somewhat sharp....
