If the starter was spinning it could not have been "burnt out" but maybe the reduction gearing in the nose was bad

I thought that odd as well - not quite the same but I had a dishwasher pump that spun nicely on testing except the the pump shaft was stationary with the central armature/rotor windings  spinning on the shaft!

We did have a pump on a ship where the shaft snapped halfway through the pump so couldnt tell it wasnt turning

You dont want that to be the main Bilge Pump!

Language issues mabe, this is London you know. Maybe it was a case of cutting a long story short? Whatever, I did a 12 mile 'veterinary run' through central London today with no problems except traffic so all is well for now. I wonder what else she has in store for me?
