Dodgy ignition barrel?
« on: August 17, 2024, 03:32:29 PM »
A problem I don't think I've had with the other thirteen bikes in my life is getting the ignition key to do it's job. However this past week on several occasions at an increasing rate I've got to twiddle about with the key to make the pilot light show up and starter button to work.  :o
I'm wondering if a whole new barrel may be a better option to taking the one I have in for pulling apart and fixing if possible. Anyone else had this sort of issue before?

Probably not the barrel, but the contacts at the end,

I know the 500 ignition switch can be dismantled,

Give it a go

Try spraying contact cleaner or wd40 down the key slot then click the key back and forth several times.
It might improve things without needing to go further. Nothing lost if it doesn't improve things.

I took my 400 barrel apart although you have to drill out the two I indentations on the stainless barrel in order to get it off. Once you've done that you can access the plungers but be VERY, VERY careful as you remove them and lay them out in the order they come out otherwise it will be carnage!

I got lucky tonight, I came home from the Tea Hut at Blackheath and through traffic that was bad enough to have me switch the engine off a few times. I did that again while I wedged the gate at home, went to turn the key and ....nothing.  ::)  It has stayed that way too, maybe I popped a fuse this time as well, I'll go see in daylight. However as a new barrel has only turned out to be twenty odd quid from DSS I think I'll plain get a new one.  ;)

It wont be the barrel, it will be the contact block at the bottom where the loom plugs in, or in a lot of cases doesnt properly.
Dont forget your new switch wont have the same key so wont open the seat.
Always quote the bike as parts are not compatible accross models

In the past I’ve found that the plug connections have been bad and also the rotary contacts. Clean up the connectors and give it a try. If you need to do the rotary switch it can be separated from the barrel by pushing in the three clips at the bottom of the barrel, you can then access the rotary switch to spray with contact cleaner.

Thanks Deano.  ;)  I've since taken the cowards way out and ordered a new unit, but I will dissect the old one and see what might be wrong with it.
