Dave is right about the hardness of the cushions - they felt more like a type of nylon material.
But does that make them better of worse? The DSS horseshoe is surely an improvement over OE.

The improved horseshoe still uses the same cushions for the 2 blades. They're stiff rubber but still have some 'give'.

The DS one will still need the cushion I think.
I like the look of the upgraded version even though it might carbon up eventually.

It's actually made by TT400 a member on here. It is uneconomical for him to sell direct due to postage costs (he's in SA). They are far superior to the original horseshoe imo.

I don't think I will be splitting the crank case. Is that the only way to replace the rubber, presuming of course I need to replace it?

No, but it is the only way to replace the tensioner horseshoe.
