Condenser for points...HOLY MOLY!!!
« on: September 02, 2024, 10:20:46 AM »
From DSS - For ND points plate:
Part No
30250333004
30250-333-004
Price£26.47
(£31.76 inc vat UK)

Above price from the DSS USA site, not available on the UK site.  So two would be around £63 plus shipping.  Are these available anywhere at a REASONABLE price?  I don't object to paying for quality stuff (heck, I just bought a CB400 brake rotor that may or may not be useful but the price seemed reasonable for the product). £63 is an absurd price for a couple of capacitors.

2017 BMW R1200RS

2015 Ducati Diavel
2019 Honda Africa Twin
2019 Honda NCT750

You should check the price of condensers!

That price is about the same as they were in late 70's so i would consider it reasonable.

If you need both points and condensers its cheaper to buy the complete plate at about £110

Glad I don't REALLY need them at the moment.  I was shocked at the price AND at the fact that DSS doesn't carry them as a "usual" item.

FWIW:   It wouldn't be hard to buy a couple of appropriately rated condensers (capacitors) and remote mount them but that's WAAAY too inelegant/shade tree for me to consider!  I do a lot of restoration of vintage valve (tube) hiFi gear so I'm pretty familiar with replacing capacitors and/or testing them with an actual capacitor tester that, in addition to capacitance, tests leakage at rated voltage; multimeters can't do that.  A capacitor can show correct capacitance on a multimeter but fail totally when system voltage is applied.  A cap of around 2.5 uF and 630 volts DC would work fine for the application.   Here's one that might even fit on the points plate but the temperature max of 85C would be the factor that might require remote mounting.   https://uk.farnell.com/kemet/c4gamud4250aa1j/cap-2-5-f-450vac-5-pp-axial/dp/2808976

Nice quality capacitor but value 10 times what is should be for a Honda ignition ! Should be more around the 0.25uF value.

I often think of removing the inside of the Honda part and fitting one of these and then potting in epoxy. These caps are good for +125 degrees C It would look standard too. There is also a 0.22uF version.

For the non purist and mentality inept sparky, would one of those options work on our Honda  ignition? Refers to compatability with battery "Kettering" setups?

Yes the standard Honda ignition is a 'Kettering' type ignition system.

This is probably the ideal capacitance (i.e 0.27 microFarads) fot the Honda ignition. In stock too .. I am tempted. ;D

No doubt it will work fine since it meets the uF and voltage spec and can handle the temperature.  It would just be a function of how/where to mount it depending on its size.  Let us know how it goes!  :)

Cheers .. I think I would need to mount it on a small PCB. I do have a few PCBs that may do the job that I mounted shock sensors on for another job.

Intrigued by the Kettering name / person. He also invented the electric self starter! And much else.

Out of interest: wouldn't high frequency/micro vibrations be an issue?
Like de-laminating the tracks from the GFK, cracking the soldering spots or component internals?
