Anyone here have any knowledge of the NC400
« on: November 03, 2024, 08:44:10 PM »
I have been offered a VFR400 NC30 for free and in very large bits. It had been used as a normal road bike before the owner developed a taste for track days. The bike was stripped and made ready for the track with all the original parts being kept in storage. I don’t know at this stage if the bike is a genuine UK example or a later import.
Does anyone have any experience with these bikes?  Are there any particular issues and pitfalls with them such as leaky rads, internal corrosion of the water cooled cylinders etc. Are there any particular spares that are difficult to obtain and does the rear wheel chain adjuster seize as they do on the VFR800 if not properly maintained? is it true the spark plugs are over £20 each! I know the fuel tank is very rusty inside and is the reason the bike isn't in use, I think I can fix that (hopefully) with a good dose of DEOX-C.
I fully expect the original exhaust to be on the way out if it isn’t stainless so does anyone know of a good replacement system.
Any pointers would be appreciated to help me decide if I should take it on :)

I had an NC30, VfR400R

Superb, handles like a dream

You need tiny hands, everything is so small,

Surprising amount of grunt at 6k,

Revs to 14k,but never sounds rushed,

Cruising nicely at 10k to 12k, but those are highly illegal speeds, I never found a corner that I thought after I could have gone around faster,

Most are 30yrs old, you could find anything,

But the price is right,

Rick Oliver specialises in them

Check his website

Also his email

Ricknc30@gmail.com

I got rid of mine because I couldn't just ride it slowly, and I need my licence

BTW,the ultimate mod is a VFR750 motor in a NC30 frame

Bagsee me first in queue if you don’t want it. I’d love to restore one of those, though they can be expensive depending on mechanical condition and availability of parts.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.
I'm going to check out the Rick Oliver website and watch the youtube vids.
Soooo tempted just to say YES and then worry about where Im going to store it :)
What has made the decision really difficult is a mate asked me yesterday to restore his 70's Honda TL125 for him and I said I'd do it to keep me occupied over the winter. I need to finish Ratty first though now I've got my mojo back having just finished the reapirs to the Triton following it's fall from the workbench :(

I’d snatch their hands off! Great little bikes, I’ve got the previous NC24 model. The NC30 has better forks, brakes amongst other refinements. The engines are bulletproof and performance is great.
