Hi everyone just got a 1974 cb550k good condition but some of the casing needs sorted, some of the clear laquer coating is patchy so i was asking if it is better to try and remove the old laquer before trying to polish the casings, dont want mirror finish just a neater look if i need to remove the laquer any suggestions on the best way to proceed any advice would be appreciated, will probably be in touch with more questions about the bike in the near future thank you in the meantime Alan.

Others here might know a better way, I'd use Industrial paint stripper then follow the guide on here for polishing, I use a buffing wheel.
Ken is the master if you want to get marks out pretty sure there is a thread here in Tricks & Tips.

Polishing is a tedious, slow and dirty job!  Definitely get a powerful bench polisher or convert a bench grinder with polishing mops and be prepared to end up looking like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins

Hi Alan

The king of polishing is Ken ( odd job ) he has set me off and given good advice on how to get started and what your need to get your polishing project off the ground

https://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk

https://metalpolishingsupplies.co.uk

He also recommended to me some tiny plastic type wheels that go into a Dremel tool

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383595609180?

Hope this helps you get started on your project May be to remove the lacquer would be to soak in petrol or put a mild pain stripper on BUT don't leave the paint stripper on for long as it might stain the aluminium.

Best Regards

Nigel
