CB360 Ignition Timing Headache
« on: February 16, 2025, 06:09:20 PM »
I’m hoping I can get some advice regarding the ignition timing on this bike.

I recently stripped the engine and, cleaned everything and gave it a lick of paint, reassembled and now have the engine back in the bike and I am now trying to get it back up and running.

A week or two ago I set the valve clearances, static timing etc and the bike started first time and seemed pretty good. I started to balance the carbs and the bike started running rough and died on me. I wasn’t sure why but when I started to check everything from the start again I found the bolt that holds the spark advancer that goes into the end of the cam had come loose and out. I fitted this back nice and snug and did the ignition timing again. I’m now only firing on the left side, I have taken the carbs off three times and am now happy these are ok.

What does happen though is every time I redo the ignition timing and start the bike and still only fire on one side, I check the ignition timing and it’s way out again, I’ve tried this three times now and every time  after the bike has run for a few minutes, I check the ignition timing and it’s nowhere near again.

Any ideas of what could be happening or what I might have messed up? I can get it right on the mark but it just won’t stay there?

Things i would check
Advance unit has the peg on the back fitting properly in cam, or might be peg on cam fitting in advance unit, it has been 50 years since i worked on one
Advance unit has decent springs returning points cam properly
Has the rotor on crank started to come apart and/or keyway sheared
Did points get damaged when advancer came loose
EDIT  there is a pin 30905216000 shown on parts at cmsnl that goes in cam to locate advancer, damage there would cause your problem

Thank you again Bryan, I will get back in the shed this week and check these. I’ve looked on CMSNL but can’t see it on the parts diagram, sorry to be a pain but would there be any chance you could let me know if it’s on this diagram or let me know the key number so I can see it on the diagram?
