Steering lock Re-fitting issue on Superdream.
McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
Before the frame was powder coated I removed the steering lock.
The rivet & washer came out relatively easily, the lock has clearly been replaced judging by it's as new condition.
I have had no issue on the 400 re-fitting the lock. I have the correct replacement washer & rivet, it will not however fit as it should. Rivet is 4.1mm in the manual.
The rivet is not a tight fit in the frame, my understanding is that when the rivet touches the end of the hole, it opens out when struck on the head splaying outwards to hold in place.
My thoughts are that it has possibly been drilled out in the past so the hole is possibly deeper than standard?
Any suggestions as to how I can now fit the lock?
Bryanj:
I dont think it splays out Ted its just a tight fit like the vin plate rivets on the 500, possibly drill to a size to fit a lager one of that type mate
Oddjob:
What size is the hole, try testing with drills until you get one that's a snug fit.
There's a specific name for those rivets but I can't remember what it is right now.
Try searching for hammer drive rivets, should be able to buy a slightly bigger one Ted.
McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
Oddly enough Bryan the rivet is not a hammer in type like the VIN plate.
There are no serrations on the rivet that is a hollow tube like construction with a solid top end section.
There are slots in the side of the tube section to allow it to expand when you tap in the head part.
It's a sort of inverse Pop rivet.
As you say it might be worth trying to size a hammer fix alternative, I have a few different Pop rivets, might see if that could work.
Not a great photo but you can see it's hollow lower down in the slot.

Oddjob:
The original would most likely have been the hammer in type with the spiral twist.
