Why oh why !
« on: March 26, 2025, 06:53:47 PM »
Been peeling off the clamp band from an old speedometer to recover a few spares.  It was a bit gnarly when I bought it in a scrap yard along with a few other bits in the late 80s for next to nothing.  I had always wondered how the mileage was near zero and scratch marks got on to the digit dials.  It tops out at 130 mph so not sure which bike it was off but the casing is the same as the 400F. There's swarf stuck to anything that has grease on it gumming up the works.  Also need the bottom half for a half decent tacho that has one m6 stud broken off.

The trip reset knob came off easily after holding a soldering iron on the shaft for a couple of minutes.

Now I know.

Someone has drilled a couple of holes in the side and tried to flick the numbers round using a pointed  implement and then bunged up the hole with epoxy.  I'm going to have to separate the two bits which are now epoxied together to recover the rubber seal which I need.

My gages were dismantled by cutting the band a long time ago so that the black bits could be painted and evict a spider that had set up home in one of them when they were off the bike for about a year when I was a hard up student.

The outers are well stone chipped  now again so time to have a tidy up.

Not sure if I should crimp a band on this time or just re use the cut bands which are held together with a couple of screws countersunk from the inside of the band and filed into a T shape to hold them while  a small saddle strap and nuts to be tightened.

Regards
Dave

Poor spider, then again I cleaned the cobwebs out of the carb bank when I first got my CB400F2 seven years ago! There are now such good after market clocks for the CB400F though, I wouldn't bother restoring any myself! As for mileage, well I discovered the speedometer I replaced wasn't original either. Never trust statistics unless you fiddled the figures yourself Churchill said!  ;)
