Rev counter oil seal removal CB500K
« on: April 30, 2025, 09:30:59 AM »
My basket project didnt come with the rev counter drive housing, but managed to find a used one on Ebay.

Wanted to change oil seal but difficult to find a suitable size rod to push out as just slipped through hole and couldnt hook out.

Solution was to soak housing in paint strippoer for a few hours which disintegrated the rubber and allowed it to be hooked out.

Still dont understand why Honda rebated the mating surface on cam cover by fixing ?

My theory is they rebated it to aid locating it but then changed their minds. I don't think the rebate helps, it can pull the top back if the screw is tightened too hard and crack the drive inside the camcover. I have a friend looking into making me some tacho drives in another metal to stop it breaking so easily. He has his own CNC machine and likes a challenge. The stumbling block is how much it would cost to make, we'll see.

I also wonder if people have tried to draw in the housing with new outer O ring, using screw.

Mine needed a tap with rubber hammer to seat

You need to twist the housing as it goes home, in order for the gears to mesh between the drive itself and the camshaft, as soon as it seats then just twist it back into alignment with the screw. Some people put a washer in the recess to stop it being overtightened. I may have the new machined ones made with an engagement lug to get rid of the recess.
