Slick 50 oil additive
« on: May 28, 2025, 04:47:33 PM »
Does anyone have an opinion on the oil additive slick50? Back in the 1980s I used it in my RG500 and my 1988 Suzuki GS450 which gave 50,000 trouble free despatch riding.  ;D  It was however a bike from new and it had a full service record, so nothing to really compare it with even if I wanted to, except a 1982 CB250N Super Scream that fell to bits in less than a year of despatch, but without a good service record.  ::)
Your thoughts on this magical potion anyone?  :)

I know lister put some in an industrial diesel for a day or so then drained all the oil out and ran it till it siezed, about 20 hours if memory correct BUT i have my doubts with wet clutches

I think twenty hours without oil is a very long time. Why the doubts with wet clutches though?

Anything that makes things super slippy, like slick 50 claims, could get into the fiber of the plates and make it slip, similar to car synthetic with "friction modifiers"

I have a unopened one of these (250ml) and a bit in another bottle, but have no memory what I used it in.

I see your point Bryan. I don't remember ever having a clutch slip on either bike though.  :-\

I'd not put it near a clutch either, containing PTFE & Molybdenum as I understood it and not suitable.

Its definitely slippery as I've experience of it in manual transmission car gearboxes that causes the synchro "clutches" to slip and make the gearchange absolutely shite  :)

The synchro design calls for friction to be generated in cone type clutches, usually of phosphor bronze and steel interfaces, these to spin up the gears about to be engaged ..... then making the gears all crunchy, very crunchy  :)

I’ve used it in my engines and didn’t have any problems with the clutch. In fact the same clutch went for over 200000 miles so it must not have any effect or maybe it’s beneficial.

I bunged mine off the Tower Bridge ....a great feeling of peace, freedom ,tranquillity descended upon me, I could be inaccessible at last!  ;D
I soon had to get another for emergencies and ID verification  ::) but I keep it a secret!  ;)
