550 MODIFICATION OF FUSE BOX & NEW STEERING LOCK FITMENT
« on: June 28, 2025, 02:26:30 PM »
I would like to modify my fuse box from the std glass fuses to take std blade size fuses which would help to eliminate a bike thief pushing a spare glass fuse in-between the top two fuses and being able to start the bike, This is a well know problem with the fuse box on these bikes. Has anyone done this modification? If so where did you get your fuse box from & did you stick to a 6 fuse box unit ?

Also I need to fit a new steering lock to my bike as the old one had no key & the thread on the lower yoke had been mullered by pass owners,  The lower yoke I got hold of did not have a drilled hole or anything that the lock locates into or blocks so that the steering does not move / locate into, Has anyone fitted a steering lock to a lower yoke where one has not been fitted before ?

Fuse box go to US site and message Hondaman as he does them.
Steering lock depends
500 had steering lock on bottom yoke that locked a pin against the half moon steering stop on frame.
550 had a lump on side of headstock with a Nieman lock that went into a slot cut into the steering stem, these you had to drill out if you lost the key as you could not get keys and lock was held in by a washer and rivet

This is UK models not US

This is what I did to mine, think the fuse box was from eBay.
My electric plate is heavily modified to allow for a solid state rectifier.

Hi Steve
That looks just about what I want to do could you give us some rough measurements of the size of it  please. I take it the starting electrical circuit is 15A on these bikes ?

Hi Bryan
Thank you for your reply can't seem to find a email for Hondaman was hoping to find something in uk that would be suitable.

I have the 550 K3 uk version and it has the lump on the headstock where the lock assy fits into the frame so I think I need the Nieman lock type , Didn't release that there where 2 types of locks for these bikes I will have a look on eBay and see what's on offer. Not so keen on drilling into the steering stem though can't afford to mess that up 😂 and would need to work out where to drill it compared o where handle bar position is to lock position .

Send him a pm on the us site for info he usually answers quickly.
I take it you have a 500 lower yoke without the slot for lock? I may have a 550 one somewhere but not certain

Hi Bryan
ok will send him a pm . I am not sure what the steering is from 500 / 550 they seemed quite hard to source a good one a few years back when I found mine, If you have one that's is a spare and you like to sell it to a good home please let us know how much you want for it.

Then that's another part which is the correct bit fitted to Muttley

You will have to drill out the brass lock if you dont have keys so carefully remove rivet and washer then drill out the lock with big drill, keep the spring as they sometimes dont come with the lock, same as 400 four by the way and the 750 if they had that type.
Once the lock is out put a screwdriver down the hole and turn bars lock to lock, you may find it has the slot in the stem!
Honda part number for lock is 53600404611

This is my modified electric plate bare.
The original rectifier and regulator were burnt out so I welded a plate to hold the solid state rectifier with a bracket in front to hold the fuse box.
It all still fits perfectly under the side cover.

Part number changed to 53600MFRAC0 and even cheaper at DS plus he has stock

Hi Bryan
I unfortunately forgot to drill the lock out before I took it to powder coating so they drilled the lock and managed to mislay the spring and the washer so I have emailed Folwers for the complete lock assembly including the washer, rivet , & spring so where see what they come back with.
thanks for you heads up
