550 tacho drive project
« on: July 15, 2025, 09:11:53 AM »
I am just doing some R&D on the possibly of having some of these machining up 12451323000.
The guy doing the machining has a few more steps to do before I get one back and can see if it all fits and spec is better than what's currently on the market.

Quick picture update. What do you think ?? Comments welcome.

Not sure why I can't get this picture to enlarge when you click on it Since found out picture was taken while is was cutting

Just as a update Will is going to see if a friend can put the grove in up the side which I take it allows the oil to get up / down, This is machined from a 50mm alloy bar so higher quality, The test peice it is currently roughly machined out as per picture.

It then has to have a finish machining process done which Will buys in for his machine to do it when he has got enough to warrant the high cost of program which his machine uses which then gives him 30days to do it.

Hopefully in another 3-4 weeks I be able to show you a finished one and will be able to run a batch off which hopefully will be for less than currently on offer

So If you think you might need one keep a eye on this post

Sorry for the slow update, I have finally got the CAD work done although it will need a tiny bit of fine tuning before a small run is done,  My machinist Will has just taken on a huge order for "Big bore & Gas flowing a large batch of mini cylinder heads which is his bread and butter and he has set up his machines to do these it will be ages before he can spend some time back onto this tacho drive project.

We have also run into a slight machining problem with it Will can't get close enough with his CNC axis machine to do the 2mm grove and hole that runs up the outside of the casting The only way he can do it is to put a 2 mm bit on the end of a 8-10 inch extension which makes it more vulnerable to breaking the tooling and at £500- 750 each can’t afford to do that to many times. The only other bit that needs adding to the CAD is the inside where the seal / “O” ring sits and the drive shaft runs through it , Then we should be almost good to go. The overall appearance is very close to the original but there has been a few slight changes to added for strength and for ease of machining.

Does any here know of a good family run company or has a friend that could help get this project over the line I am looking for a CNC Mill Turn 5 axis head machine these machines should be able when set up to do one of these units from a 48 mm Aluminium billet bar in around 30-40minutes all in one go

My aim is to get these units done for around £60-£75 per unit (or less) +P&P I am doing this at Cost / No Profit  just want to make these easier to more affordable to the forum members

Who would be interested just to give me a idea of numbers
These pictures are just rough out and are not had the finish turning done

Key points

CNC 90% done & uses a easy accessible UK CAD system
48mm bar is required most machine max six is 50mm I believe
1st rough test is done & drive shaft fits, and overall length and die seem ok
Final finish and fit is still to be done

This is a very, very long shot but.........try Morgo (Autovalues Engineering) in Idle, Bradford. Phone number is 01274614424.

Miles is the owner. He took the company over from his late father so it is a family business. He very likely has the equipment you need as he makes the famous Morgo oil pumps in house along with a lot of other parts. His main business isn't bike parts, thats a side line he is keping going in memory of his father, his main work I understand is protoyping and batch work.
I've been round his workshop and it is very professional. Miles is a biker as well just as his father was and he will be more likely to help you than anyone else.

If I were you I would go there rather than telephone as he's a very busy guy and the call will go through to the main office so he may not call you back as he really is busy.

When I called him about the problem I had with the Morgo barrels fitted to my Triton he asked me to go up there, book a hotel for the night and he'd make me a new set to my spec. True to his word he did exactly that, showed me around the workshop, made me endless mugs of tea, is a great story teller and even gave me a lift back to Leeds railway station with my new special barrels.

He is unlikely to be cheap but he may well offer to batch the parts for you or just do the work you need.

Good luck.

Hi Dave

Thank you for the update, I do have a possible lead of a girl machinist in Thirsk who has just set up shop so I need to go and see her 1st and to support a local business.  But I will keep him in mind as if I can't find anyone I look him up as he is quite away from home here in N Yorkshire. Also good to have a plan "B"

Thanks once again Nige
