Loose mirrors.
« on: July 25, 2025, 03:46:47 PM »
My mirrors on my 400/4 have come loose at the mirror end where they are attached to the stalk. I can’t for the life of me see a way to tighten them back up. Can it be done or is it a case of new mirrors? Thanks.

I think the ball joints have worn out. Time for new mirrors I'd say.
They aren't all that expensive if pattern will do. https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB400F-SUPER-SPORT-FOUR/part_28482

I prefer these because the arm can be adjusted on the go or folded inwards when the bike is in the garage to save keep banging into them

With any aftermarket part, check the thread size, some are M8 or M10

I've got mirrors like that Dave. The trouble with them is that those screws and their pits are rust traps.  :o  I give mine a reguar shot of the ACF-50.

Stainless hex socket cap screws....

The original screws seemed to be made of soft cheese anyway.

I’m wondering if the David Silvers mirrors are the ones that you can only see your elbows in, oR have they improved the design?

At the end of 2022, having spent 34 years of my elbows giving me adoring looks every time I glanced in the mirrors, their appearance had deteriorated, (mirrors, not elbows),  and the relationship had to end.  Like all true relationships, a wad of money had to change hands, and I fell in love with a set of Halcyon twins.  Expensive, yes, but easy to fit, polished stainless steel, vibration proof, and a superb field of rearward vision.  If you suffer from separation anxiety, there is such a vast range of adjustment, that you could set them to still give a view of your elbows if desired.

Thanks for the replies guys. Those bar end mirrors do look nice but a bit out of my price bracket. Probably get the Silvers ones although there some second hand ones on the forum I am enquiring about. Thanks again.

Nice looking mirrors, Tricky!  Are they flat glass or "Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear"?

Also, can they fold inward to reduce the width if necessary for tight storage, etc?

Hi Mike, definitely convex glass to give you a wide field of vision. I spent most of my working life driving, and flat glass is bloody awful, very narrow field and every slight vibration is exagerated.  Even the original Honda mirrors were very slightly convex.  Yes. they can be folded in, they work on a 'cam' type system, so one or two clicks and they are back in their original setting.

Received the mirrors today.  These are REALLY top quality items; I'm very impressed.  Where most bar-end mirrors (or bar-end weights) use rubber "tubes" that compress when you tighten a bolt to hold them in place, these use three steel tapered bushings with angled edges that cause them to "expand" as the bolt is tightened.  There is absolutely NO play/flex in the mounting.  The materials and finish are top notch.  They are far better quality than any other bar end mirror I have ever seen.  If you want bar end mirrors, buy them, you'll like them.  They are worth every penny!

Thanks Tricky for posting your reply/comment about them!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I'd ad this though it's weeks "late."  FWIW, the Honda (brand) mirrors are far better than the aftermarket mirrors.  DSS has both but, of course, the Honda mirrors cost a lot more!  The OEM Honda mirror area is slightly larger - the mirror occupies the full area of the circle, it does not have that black "gasket" around the edge.  They are also somewhat convex to provide a wider view, unlike the aftermarkets.  IMO, they are worth the money if you want standard mirrors.  You can actually see usefully to the rear, not just your elbows...though they WILL be in the view!  :)
