What am I missing?

I keeping meaning to find out! On my bike there is a strip of black metal holding info that is missing from the frame, see picture. I wondered if it was under the paint now but seemingly not. I've yet to find out for sure what it is but is it something I'm legally required to have. I hope this is isn't the daftest question!  ;D

McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
That's where the chassis plate should be, has it been painted over?

exvalvesetdabbler:
There would be what I call the frame plate. Would have been riveted on when new.

I have deliberately obscured mine in this image, it would have the frame number matching the one  stamped on the headstock, also info on the weight and a few other bits of info.

Not sure if it's a requirement so long as the one on the headstock is readable and not filled in with paint or worse been ground off.

Nurse Julie:
Don't worry about it missing George. You can get a new one made up if you wish. As long as the VIN is stamped into the headstock, that's what really matters. UK Honda CB SOHC 4'S didnt don't have those VIN tags before 1976 models anyway.
Solent VIN Plates in Waterlooville make them.
