550 K1 Speedo and Tacho
« on: September 13, 2025, 03:42:11 PM »
I was having a look at the gauges that came with my bike with the view of getting new faces for them from 750 Faces.com. It was quickly obvious that they were not K1 550  gauges, the give away was the red line on the tacho and 140 mph on the speedo.

I recon they are K4 750, so the base plate and holders are I think the same.  They are ND gauges  so I thought I would try to get the correct speedo then put new 550 faces on them, I made a guess that the tacho would have the same ratio and work with a new face with red line in correct position.

So trawling ebay for a speedo I found a  Nippon Seiki one for a 550 F in ok condition and at a good price and bought it.  My thoughts were I could put a Seiki face on the ND tacho and all would be good.
Ok dont judge, it was late at night  I had had a large can of Stellar and looked back and forth at the 750 faces website for comparison.  I think the tacho face holding screws are in a different position but imagine can get over that.

So do you feel my plan is ok or have I wasted my money?

There are enough variations with Seiko that will make your head spin, without adding ND into the equation.

I have a few variants of Honda gages of unknown fitment and at least 3 variants of 400/4 gauges with different faces.

What I noticed,

60 mph seems to be at the 12 o clock position regardless of the max number printed at the top of the scale.

You can't fit a tacho internals to a Speedo base, screw holes don't align.

Calibration is the same for Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki Speedos. Tachos differ, honda being 7:1

Seike gages have different sealing rubbers between the top and bottom parts and some top (black) parts are 1.5 mm different in height to compensate. Completely screwed me up trying to mix and match the best bits from the junk box.

Regards
Dave

The 550K1 model originally was fitted with either Seiki or ND gauges. I have seen both types fitted. The Seiki and the ND gauges are compleately a different design internally. As you mention you can't put ND faces on a Seiki gauge.

It might be a plan to post an image of the gauges and many on here will be able to tell you what gauges you have.
