CB550F2 Cracked rear engine mount
Laverda Dave:
When I found what I thought was a crack in the lower case of my 400/4 I found a guy in Banstead who is a specialist welder.
He welded the crack for me (he also did a lot of welding on the cylinder head of my Triton) He made a great job of both.
He's a one man band so he might be a bit difficult to get hold of as he works a lot on sites.
His name is Andy and the company is called Specialist Welding Services. Contact number is 07957557935.
mtrhead:
just an update on my cracked motor mount casting. I finally managed to get the sheared bolt out. It took several (very) careful attempts to arc weld a nub onto a bit of the bolt left inside the mounting and eventually got it out through the broken side of the casting.
With the help given on this thread the next step is try and get and the broken bit welded back on. I suspect I might need a helicoil insert in due course as well but again, thanks to all who helped out on this thread. If it all goes wrong I might still be looking for a new bottom pair of cases.
Murf:
Just my opinion but you would be better off getting the engine cases offered by Seabeowner.
Good welding isn’t free (unless it is of course) and I have seen a few Honda engine cases that have had welds which seemed to be very successful only for them to crack after a period of use. Probably due to the expansion, contraction and vibration an engine goes through, plus the metal of the castings isn’t the best stuff to weld. If you do go for the welding warm the case well before welding and let it cool down gradually say over a couple of hours.
McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
I would also replace the engine casings rather than weld them for peace of mind.
If such casings were unobtainable then the repair option would be the default option.
Your choice obviously, the amount of work involved if the weld failed a few years down the line would be a consideration for me.
