Internal silencer painting
« on: December 21, 2025, 09:13:46 AM »
I've just bought a new set of Busso exhausts from DSS.
Who makes a paint system for coating the inside of the silencers  ?
I've seen something "specialist" advertised somewhere,  but I can't remember what or who sold it.
I generally try to avoid "top dollar" automotive products, but in this case the exhaust system was over £1300, so maybe using something expensive would be justified.

I used to throw some 2 stroke oil through it. Burns off in the pipe and leaves a residue. No idea if it helped, but I figured anything that would cover the internals would help to keep condensation off.

Try and make it a golden rule NOT to start the engine unless you are going to get it nice and hot. I paid the price in the 1970's on my 750, silencers rotted through in 14 months. Of course with 4 separate pipes and a large engine you are going to need some decent length journeys to achieve this. Even on my 400 I follow this regime, and I'm still running an OE system which I fitted in 2006. Merry Xmas to one and all.

This was the way I used to do it way back in the 70's

Nobody ever heard of any sort of internal coating system then  ?
Apart from oil that is.
I'm sure I saw something about using a paint "wand" to spray the internals of the silencers.
Basically this was just a length of plastic pipe attached to a stick, with a 360° spray nozzle on the end.
Trouble is,  I can't remember exactly where I saw it.

No - but DonR on the US forum swears by the stuff.

If it actually does what it says on the tin, it could possibly cut down on the amount of bluing on the downpipes.
I only had a quick look at the Busso header pipes, but I don't think they're double skinned,  although I could be mistaken.
I also forgot to look for drain holes at the bottom of the silencers,  but I'm assuming there are none.
Just wondering if I should drill some myself ?

The Busso’s are double skinned (don’t ask me how I know lol). I was thinking about doing the same re. adding drain holes.

How difficult were the Busso pipes to fit ?
Obviously,  people's perception of difficult will vary according to their mechanical abilities.
I'm pretty good at coercing uncooperative lumps of metal into doing what I want, but I can't work miracles.

I was part of the initial group buy - had to trim the header portion of the exhausts down by several mm on every pipe in order to get the rear footrest mounting bolts to line up. They were an utter pig to fit. I called Busso out very early in the process to get them to update the welding jigs, but they just ignored any feedback and ploughed on with production. Didn’t realise they are still in business and supplying DSS.

Many thanks for that.
I've noticed on mine that the ends of the header pipes don't seem square to the tube.
As I overlooked buying any 8mm countersunk screws before the holiday, the delights of fitting are going to have to wait until January now.
