Re Assemble Engine in or out of the Frame
« on: March 11, 2026, 09:47:02 AM »
I dismantled the Top end of the engine, before i removed the bottom end from the frame.

But i can see that reassembling the whole thing will be easier out of the frame than the reverse of the process I used.

What is the accepted wisdom for bringing together the top and bottom end, in or out of the frame?

Thanks

I think that re-assembly out of the frame is far better. There is far less caution and finesse needed when dismantling, but rebuilding successfully is easier to achieve without frame tubes, cables, and wires getting in the way, plus of course you will be constantly working on either side of the engine, which is made easier if you can just turn the engine round in front of you on a bench. (Whilst comfortably seated on your stool!!!). The only down side being that you may have to enlist the help of a friend to lower the frame over the finished item.

Depends. If the frame is bare then assemble outside the frame. However if it’s not then just assemble the crankcases, no clutch, no rotor etc and assemble in the frame afterwards. You can lift it solo if required, less chance of frame marking and you can align the engine easier in the frame mounts. Makes for a smoother ride as it vibrates less that way. No oil pan on either way or oil filter.

If building outside leave off the top breather cover, sump and oil filter as its easier to get in
