Can these be re-used?
« on: March 25, 2026, 06:40:35 PM »
The NC30 has quite a few odd looking locknuts used on various parts of the bike that are OEM. I have cleaned them up and had them replated.
I'm wondering now if they are a 'use once only' type locking nut?
What's the verdict, safe to re use (I was going to use a drop of loctite on the threads just to be safe as six of these are used on the rear sprocket bolts) or should I replace (and can anyone tell me what this type of locknut is called)?

As you intend to use locktight I would use them again

Just torque them up

Unsure to 100% about reuse, but agree with John and your intention to locktite them as reasonable.

Have you tried winding them onto a bolt to assess resistance and locking effect Dave  ?

There are these type of locking nut available  via  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125558964620 in titanium. I've used this supplier for miscellaneous ti fixings as they are good suppliers.

This one in plane steel https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202512419702 but I've not used them.

They look like aerotight type nuts so should be reusable.

From McMaster-Carr site..
Spring-Stop Locknut
These locknuts withstand heavy vibration similar to distorted-thread nuts, and you can use them over and over. The prongs at the top bend when tightened to create tension for a secure hold. As you remove the locknut, the prongs spring back to their original shape, so you can install the nut again without losing holding power. Also known as Fuji locknuts.

I wouldn't bother with loctite.

Thank you all for the replies.
I'm going to use them again although I will test them as Nigel suggests to see if they still have grip and just to be sure will put a dab of loctite on just the sprocket lock nuts.
