Hi all.

Ok first post on my new project that I picked up from my late dad’s estate last weekend which is a little CB400F Mike Hailwood replica.

Thought I would start will a peek inside the tank as the bike has sat for +10 years.

Tank does not look too bad and think after a clean out to remove any surface rust should be ok.

Interesting modification as the guy who did the changes has used an original tank and added a tail piece and tank scollops to clear bars.

Also had a look at the rest of the bike and despite the years of standing it turns over ok with compression and oil in sump looks fresh. But as expected clutch is frozen so no doubt cover off to check plates and carefully free of the clutch.

(My other project also suffers this so always once a month just rocked her back and forth in first to free up plates)

Also if Speedo is correct mileage looks ok but clocks will be treated to a full rebuild like my old bike.

Think next steps will be to remove the carbs first for a complete strip clean and rebuild.

Then after some other checks and with rebuilt carbs and fresh fuel via a remote tank see if I can get the old girl to fire up and have a listen to assess the engine for any possible  issue.

Overall a nice project with some nice touch’s like 4 open exhaust pipes that should sound rather fruity, a period twin leading shoe front brake and drop bars.

But the best bit will be helping my son restore this and the CB77 305 in parallel so he can learn how we used to fix stuff as said if he wants the little CB77 can be his first real bike

Will catch up again soon as we progress

Best wishes always Al

Iirc the 305 Super Sport has a 180 Deg crank rather than the usual parallel twin set up.
As a result  the two firing strokes are so close together at higher rpm that the sound and the rev counter made you think the rev counter was inaccurate.

This is a neat 500 restoration in the USA.

Hi all

Let the madness begin

Spent a little time in garage tonight and removed the dolphin fairing.

One removing the fairing due to the fabricated headlamp bracket mounted on the headstock found an interesting place for the replica vin number

Also taking a closer look at the rear sets these will certainly get the mr Kelly redesign treatment

Even though it does need the odd repair plan for the fairing itself is to just hang it up safely out of harms way for now as this will be the last part to restore and refit, and would be good to leave as is for now so we know the final paint scheme.

More to follow as we progress but certainly going to be a nice rebuild and would definitely like to add my spin on it like my old CB400F project.

Catch up again soon

Best wishes Alhttps://rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/65870

Hi all.

Ok spent a short time in the workshop today

Fairing now hung up out of harms way

Now the fairing is off when looking around the headstock area, noticed that when turning bars due to the modifications done the stop locks are as useful as a chocolate teapot and loom and other stuff gets trapped first between the fork leg and the additional fixed headlight mounting, so when we rebuild this will need sorting ASAP (Think I will also need to build a replacement main loom too as the original is in pretty poor shape)

Also started to look at the engine and
decided to hook up a battery to see if anything would work.

Really surprised to see a neutral and oil pressure light come on and other stuff work

Spured on by this small win, we removed the plugs then kicked her over a few times with no issues. Then using the electric start with no plugs in cranked her over again to circulate a bit of oil round the motor and hey presto oil pressure light goes out and stays off for about 30 seconds after you stop cranking that should indicate (fingers crossed)we have good crank bearing clearances as if crank had clearance issue such a oversize / worn mains or big ends oil pressure tends to drop much quicker.

Next decided to see if we have and life at the plugs which on first check was a resounding Doc Macoy “It’s dead Jim” but after cleaning and checking the points and cleaning some bullet connectors we have life on all four plugs.

Not bad start and next step (as now I know I have a “working ignition system”) is order 4 new plugs the remove carbs for a strip and rebuild,
then see if she fires up ok on a remote fuel supply.

Now bad start and progress is progress

That’s all for now folks.

Best wishes Al.https://rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/65870

Hi all

Got carbs off now (as a dab hand at this due to having one before)

Just taken a bowl off just to assess the condition inside, all look very good with no signs of corrosion and just some sediment in the bowl base so should be an easy case of strip followed by a nice US bath then rebuild with new seals

(Will try to use all the original brassware too as always had issues with Keystar kits)

On another note as the strip down progresses, even though all looked good on outside lots of short cuts taken such as just bundling up switchgear harness rather than cut to correct length due to the clip ons needing shorter cable runs

But this will all be sorted during the rebuild as most likely will order new switchgear and modify the connectors with modern spade type plugs rather than the hundreds of single bullet connectors Honda originally used.

Lastly had a look at the wheels tonight and they will need rebuilding with new spokes but it is fitted with some nice Italian alloy rims so definitely will be reusing these with the original drum brakes

Catch up soon

Best wishes Alhttps://rdlccrazy.proboards.com/thread/65870

Looks like you've lucked out as they say Alan. All seems to be in very good condition inwardly and maybe it's just cosmetically challenged due to poor storage.

Hi Dave

Yes stated to strip carbs all looks good so far with no signs of internal corrosion.

Just got to find a way of making replacement sync seals but have a cunning plan and got some 90 shore black TPU 3d printing filament in post

Best wishes Al

Hi All

Ok spent sometime this weekend with my son rebuilding the carbs.

He made a nice job of them and really enjoyed the rebuild and cannot wait to get them back on.

On another note the rubber sync seals on the originals were no longer serviceable and as they are not available individually (as per another thread) have made up  replacements out of 2mm silicone rubber

Not bad and should do the job nicely

Catch up again soon as we progress

Best wishes always Al

Well done Al (and son).

Hi all.

Next stage of carb rebuild.

Needed some new gasket just for the carb tops but the pain is they are usually only available as part of a service kit, so made some up myself.

Happy days.

Catch up again soon

Best wishes Al
