Doing a firefighting course in the Merchant Navy in 72 i was taught you can put a fuel fire out with water you have to bounce it of a steel bulkhead to turn it into a "fog"

Engine room fires on small ships is no fun.  Was on a small survey ship once when diesel was being  sprayed over hot engines, the crew managed to cool the engines down  quickly using the deck hose and then ventilate the space.  Came very close to pulling the big red handle in the wheelhouse. I was initially tasked with going up on the monkey island to close the engine room vents just in case it went up. Whole place stunk of diesel for weeks after that despite a gallon of jizer to wash down the engine room

Yes Greta! Well rightly or wrongly? the tree hugging Greta’s of the world decided that Halon was bad for the Ozone layer. Although all contained in pressurised cylinders and unlikely to be detrimental to the environment. I guess maybe the disposal of said Halon during periodic cylinder inspection and pressure testing. Something like 10years, can’t remember. But a massive cost to the industry changing out all fixed ff systems and replacing with co2 as well as all site wide individual extinguishers. Just remember vaguely about a Paris agreement.
