Electronic ignition

(1/4) > >>

Ken4004:
Hi everyone have been looking through the old posts about removing points and fitting various manufactures electronic ignition systems .

I have fitted a new set of original points from DS and set them up as per manual with no issues and then finely tweaked using a stone light and all seems good and the bike runs well.
I know that the point will probably need resetting every 1500 miles but apart from not having to keep resetting the points is there any performance diffence between correctly set original points and the electronic type ?

Bryanj:
Nope, but you will get more of an electrical drain on the battery/charging system and points will only need regapping about every 3000 plus once you have everything set right you will only need to regap and not reset timing

TrickyMicky:
I have owned my bike for 38 years, still using the points system. The only problem I had was when I chose to fit a fully fitted new backplate rather than fartarse around with new points. It lasted 3 days and resulted in me coming back home on an RAC recovery truck.  Original backplate was re-installed with new OE points and the world became a better place. Hoping it's not the kiss of death, but, it's still running the same condensers that it left the factory with.

I have no long term experience to share, but after new points and properly setting timing, I installed one of Hondaman's electronic ignitions.  It essentially uses the points, but you disconnect the condensers, and they are always there should the electronic ignition ever fail (doubtful).  It seems good, things are a little more crisp if that's a good description.

Bryanj:
Hondamans ignition is great as it doesnt draw extra power and drops the volts accross the points so the contacts dont wear our, if you are "handy" at soldering the Vellman electronic kit does the same job but you do need 2 of them
