Tracing history of my bike prior to importing into the UK?

Does anyone know the best way of tracking any information on my bike which came from the States?  The chap I purchased the bike from here in the UK no longer had any paperwork.

Unless you have the US title there is no way, and even with it its not easy as a lot of the time you have to do it in person at the dmv office
