400 project
« on: July 26, 2026, 04:15:08 PM »
Hi all,
Finally made the decision to move on the 400 I part restored some time ago and thought I’d try the forum first to see if anyone is interested in a project.
Bought some years ago as a basket case from a guy who’d started work on the bike, powder coating the frame and some other parts and stripping the engine, before giving up and piling it all up in the garage.
My plan was to quickly assemble the puzzle to figure out condition and what was needed then I’d  take it all apart again with a view to a proper, full restoration.
Didn’t go to plan as I spent far too long and much too much money getting it together, buying parts and getting it running.
I never really fell in love with the 400 however and have other projects I want to get on with so need to shift the bike and pile of parts I collected for it.
Photos show the current state – pretty much fully assembled with the exception of front brake and essentially it’s ready for taking apart and doing properly with pretty much everything there or in the pile of bits with the bike.
Original red tank and side panels were in poor state but found a really good original tank and there are also spare blue panels and a set of new remanufactured panels.
Spares include new DSS seat, new shocks (from Legend motorcycles In think), universal silencer (fitted briefly then replaced with DSS pattern silencer), DSS brake pedal, lifting handle, steering lock and various fixings and parts.
Spare engine cases and some internals as photo – condition unknown and no history or V5 on the cases but maybe some use.
There’s also a set of new piston rings and the set of original std pistons and liners – the originals were replaced with a set of low mileage oversized rings and liners
If anyone is interested in the project I’m happy to get any more details or photos etc. and run through more detail on the bike, condition and parts etc.
I was hoping value might be somewhere around the £2,000 mark but no real idea.
Otherwise I guess it’s the dreaded eBay and inevitable deluge of daft questions and offers.
Cheers,
Andy

Guess there's not a lot of interest!
Wondering if I'm better breaking the bike down and selling off as bits - would make space in the garage in the meantime at least.
I'll have a look on eBay and see what bits go for and maybe go that route
Cheers,
Andy

My feeling is the market is dead at the moment for classic bikes and cars,  save for the exceptional.
Auctions appear to show some bargains to be had, the increased costs associated with restoration don't help part finished projects.

FWIW I paid £2,000 for my 400 as a none runner  during lock down, it came with about £300 of new parts. That was during a vibrant market. Best of luck, be interesting to know what the market is like if you decide to break it for spares.

This is a neat 500 restoration in the USA.

I agree with Ted, the classic bike (and new bike) market is absolutely dead at the moment Andy, nothing is selling It's the same sorry story with old and new cars.
It's hard enough selling complete bikes but even harder trying to sell project bikes! Can you not keep it until the market improves otherwise you'll be giving it away.

Thanks Guys,
Agree it looks like the general marketplace is pretty stagnant.
I did shift a GSX1100 project a while ago which cleared some space but really wanted to move a few more complete / project bikes as I've lost the drive to restore them all.
Might give the 400 a shot on eBay and see if any interest, if not she may go back into the shed which is a shame as I guess that rarely ends well long term!
Having done a lot of work on the 400 I keep trying to convince myself to finish her off properly and have pretty much everything here to do it but just can't get back into it.

Cheers,
Andy
