Max gap 1+4 points will be when the advancer shows the position in the pic. For 2+3 points crank 180o clockwise.

I made an expensive error the first time I tried to set my 500 points.
I convinced myself that the central lobe must be worn as I just could not get the 2-3 points set correctly.
As the centre bolt was in poor condition I bought a DS replacement lobe and bolt.

Of course it made no difference at all, I replaced the Tec base plate that came with good Tec points from Steve at 400 spares. I set them without any difficulty. My plan was to change to electronic ignition once the 500 was run in, I'll stick with the points this time.

This may already be addressed in the answers, but I had the problem with running out of adjustment, and it should be easily fixed by changing the gap because that makes a big difference in the rotation of the plate. I think in my case I made the gap on the smaller side.
