Superdream Front & Rear axle nuts - prices
« on: September 18, 2026, 10:26:31 AM »
The front axle nut on my Superdream is quite badly rounded off, I was thinking of replacing it, a plain flanged, castellated  type.

The rear nut is in good condition p/n 90305-369-000 16mm £3.67 at DS.

The front nut p/n 90305-401-680 14 mm is a hefty £20.06 at DS.

Can't find one any cheaper at the moment.

Too short in overall height Ken, as it has no plain flanged section.

I have a castled SS nut from Mega Packs in my stock without the flange that looks similar. It sits too close to the fork leg rendering the split pin out of range. Not keen on adding  extra washers even if I could get the right o/d & thickness.

I've found a used complete front axle with nut & washers for £17.95, the nut looks good in the photos, waiting for a reply from the seller about the condition of the hex section.

Thanks for looking Skoti.
The flange diameter of the ebay item is 30 mm, mine is only 26 mm, the overall height (B) is 14 mm, mine is approx 19.5 mm.
I think my nut is original, the flanged nut sits against a washer that is in the closed fork end.Tightening the axle up then loads the spacers / wheel bearigs / speedometer drive etc. The front axle nut is Torqued first, the one fork clamp on the right side is then torqued up, front nut first, rear nut second.

As the nut can be tightened I've decided to keep using it.
I've filed the nut in a couple of places where the metal was folded over, judging by the marks on the outer flange section I suspect someone has used mole grips or stillsons on it.

When torqued up I can't get the split pin hole anywhere near.
I guess a thinner spit pin is the answer as I don't want to overtighten it and strip the thread.

I can see me replacing the special washer and nut, thats another £25.00 for DS.

If it's a genuine nut then why is it misaligned when torqued up? Something not right there Ted.

So I looked on CMS because why would Honda used a flanged nut and a washer? I suspected the washer had been added later and shouldn't be there but no it's shown on the parts list. However look at it's specs, it's a 15.2mm x 25mm, why 15.2mm if the nut is 14mm. Is it meant to sit inside the fork slider not outside? The spindle is shouldered, does the washer fit the spindle on the shoulder or wider part. If so it's most likely meant to go against the speedo drive. Have a look and see if that might be the case.
Kids in a the back seat cause accidents.

The washer sits inside the outer machined fork leg recess, the bolt flange sits against the washer not the outer part of the lower fork. The Speedo drive is aligned with a moulded boss arrangement on the fork bottoms.

The Torque range is 5-8 Kg-m that's close to 49-78 N-m the washer looks well compressed, normally I would have just gone tighter to get the split pin in. I'm short of the maximum torque as I've lost a lot of muscle mass along with 3 stone in body weight. It's not easy to hold the right side with an open ended spanner and do a precise Torque. After Torquing the nut, the clamp at the other end is tightened in the usual manner. The front spindle sits where it should on the clamp ends, pretty much flush. New wheel bearings went in a treat, both brake calipers look correct on either side. Wheel rotates freely.

It's close as I can get half the split pin in, there might be  some distortion/out of shapes on the castleations.

You'd have to be lucky to see the nut line up correctly to fit the split pin each time you torque it.

I usually pull it up a bit further or slacken it a touch until the split pin fits.

Or if you prefer it correctly torqued every time then you could dump the split pin and fit a re-useable lock nut, same as new Honda's have fitted and similar to what's listed below:-

Item not listed to fit the CB400NA presumably as it was not the original part.
It might fit, no flange o/d shown.
