Tank Prep
« on: October 25, 2026, 10:10:44 AM »
My tank is in very good shape, i would say the previous owner either replaced it or did an incredible job cleaning it. It's been empty since i got the bike and probably for a few years before that. When I shine a torch in, I can see shiny steel, with a few stain spots.

Since it's not in bad shape, what prep should I do before putting it back on the bike and filling it with fuel?

If you were going to store it I would have suggested swilling it out with a little diesel, but as you are about to use the tank I think filling up is enough? I put a new tank on my CB400F six years ago, no rust at all. Keeping to low ethanol fuel we already do, I think there are additives out there you can also mx in. Someone on here will know about those I'm sure.

Diesel rinse is worth doing,  do remember to petrol rinse before fitting. Ask me how I know🤔

I can guess. Not as bad as my putting diesel in my tank by mistake though. A holed piston was 'diagnosed' so I ended up getting a rebore done on the hoof. The diesel contamination diagnosis came to late.  :D
