Tank badges prepared for painting.

2015_0112frame0025 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Took a while to trim the masking tape with scalpel.

2015_0112frame0030 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Painted, but masking not removed.

Used Simoniz Tough Satin Black, which does not need primer

I have tried painting with small brush but spraying gives a more uniform finish.

Not forgetting the scews

Very intricate cutting of the masking tape martin

It was not perfect, but by angling the spray managed to cover sides and background to letters OK.

At least I could do most of it in the warm and also warmed up badges before painting.

I will take a pic after masking removed.

Just stripped and cleaned shock absorbers and have added a few points I have learnt.

When taking apart it is best to take pressure off top fixing.

Ideally you would use spring clamps/compressors, but if you dont have, with great caution you can use cable ties.

First set adjuster to maximum pretension.

Use two or more cable ties to hold colis together.

2015_0112frame0040 by nitram2010, on Flickr

Set adjuster to minimum and the spring should be held compresed enough to remove top fixing. ( or collets)

Treat the tensioned spring with extreme caution as there is quite a lot of built up energy which will release if cable ties fail, so leave on its side without contact with anything else. (If it was upright and tie/s failed it would take off)

It is a good idea to use penetrating fluid to soak the threads, push out the top rubber bush to access from top.

On CB750 there is a 17mm across flats nut that locks shaft to top and needs to be loosened using a spanner between spring coils and unscrew until reaches end of thread.

You can then hold shaft with nut and use a bar to unscrew top.

On mine one came off OK but I had to warm top part with hot air gun to expand and release.

You can now easily check the damping resistance and clean up the body before reassembly, reset adjuster to max and remove ties.

Be very careful as i have a nice scar on my top lip from doing this job without a press.

Removed the tyres, is it me getting old or just really old tyres, but hard work.

Front rim quite rusty on inside and most spokes seized

Have just ordered new DID rim from DSS with repro spokes.

Rear rim spokes not seized but quite rusty so ordered a new set.

2015_0119frame0046 by nitram2010, on Flickr

DSS dont have DID rear rims listed, almost bought a Morad alloy from another supplier, but decided against another £100 plus and the rear rim is not so visible, but the wheel is bloody heavy with the rear drum.

Rear retainer came out easly after drilling stakings.

Rebuilt rear with new spokes and bearings.

New DID rim for front with new spokes and bearings and lightly polished hub.
