« on: January 09, 2015, 02:34:20 PM »
Well i,m really pleased with the results on the front forks. All finished now and onto the swing arm
. I have new bushings , bearings, dust seals etc but how do I remove the old bushings?
Also how do I remove the old bearings.

The easiest way is knock the steel pin that,s almost as wide as the arm out then junior hacksaw blade cut grove then crush the bush making sure you don't cut into the arm. When you replace put 1 bush in then insert the long collar then fit the other bush and grease all well.Does that make sense to you? ;)

Thanks for the info Bitsa.
Just to confirm on the bearings for the shocks Trigger - they are tapered so should be pushed in with a socket not out??

There was a lot of play in the swing arm before I dismantled it. To be honest I am replacing the shock bearings because I have new shocks and thought it best.

I have removed the old bushes from the swing to fit new ones for the rear shocks but they would not fit. I then thought there was still a outer shell which needs to come out but as I started sawing through I thought id better confirm with you its the correct thing to do. Please advise me.
Secimd pic is what im attempting to do.

Thanks Mick. You gave me the courage to carry on. All done now. See pic.  A few things though :-
The originals had a rubber membrane which I assume aided the damping but these new ones do not. Any idea why?

Secondly and lastly - I bought new bushes for the swing arm at the front which I thought would be plastic - as mentioned elsewhere  - but there not. They do not appear to be worn and look as good as new even though I thought their was play there isn't. It must have been loose in the frame when I tried. Anyway I know the method with a threaded bar to remove these but I do not possess one.
It might take some effort and banging to remove the old ones. As the arm is already powder coated is it worth the effort on a 40k usa bike when all appears to be well?

The collar, which is eexpensive, normally wears more than the bushes--check that carefully for wear

Yep the collar wears quit badly if not greased often I do mine every thousand miles.
If there's no play in the bushes I would leave them.

If by the collar you are refering to the phlange bit that sits on the outside top of the bush, how would I get in there to grease mine without taking the swing arm out of my 400?. I have got a grease nipple that takes grease along between the shaft and the spindle but the grease can't get to the top of the bushes. Having just fitted my nice new brass bushes, I don't want the ends wearing thin  :'( :'(

That's why we soak phosphour bronze bushes overnight in oil before fitting them:)) because the grease from the single nipple takes a long time to reach the bushes, so oiling them first saves a lot of problems later on. The collar Bryan was referring to is the metal sleeve that fits inside the bushes with the pivot passing through it, so nothing to do with your flanges dear girl:))
If it's got tits or wheels, it's hassle, if it's got both, RUN!!!
