Hi Chaps. I'm sure this subject has been covered before but some advice. The CB500KO gets picked up tomorrow. Now, I know it's exempt from RFL but, does the new owner have to tax it and then claim the tax back or what? I have never had to do this before so any advice will help

I think it has to be declared SORN or "logically" taxed (that is on the road) even though it's free.
Can all be done online in an instant though. Before I rode to Sammy Millers the last thing I did before going out the door was tax mine (ok I forgot and had to go back but...
)

Julie, the system has changed now in so much as you can't sell a bike / car 'with tax' so to speak.
The DVLA will automatically issue a refund of the balance of road tax to the current V5 keeper (i.e. you), and the new keeper will need to tax the vehicle using the V5C/2 (green slip they retain while you send the main bit back to the DVLA to notify of a change of owner).
Clearly there's nothing stopping you 'paying' the new owner for the cost of road tax - it's just the tax doesn't automatically transfer to the new keeper.

Ok, but the bike is on SORN, and has not had any RFL on it for years, so does DVLA automatically recognise it as a historic or do I have to tell them?

Well you could just try taxing it here but don't do the final payment / checkout stage. That'll tell you if the system will allow it to be taxed online...Just need the reference number from the V5.

The word 'exempt' is a slight misnomer. Tax (or SORN) is still required, it's just that for Historic vehicles there is no cost.

Hi Julie. I see the issue now - basically what you're asking is if the tax class automatically changes to 'historic' as the rolling exemption moves forward and the vehicle qualifies.
Probably best to ring the DVLA and ask direct but I think the answer is no - you need to get them (or the local post office) to change the tax class at the point of trying to tax the vehicle.
So it may be the new keeper just needs to wait for the new V5C document to arrive and then check if the tax class is listed as Historic (i.e. see if the DVLA automatically change it over to a Hitsoric tax clas - which is doubtful knowing the DVLA). If not, then they're need to invoke the change by going to the post office and trying to tax the vehicle (as historic).

That's making more sense now James. What I will do is give him the green slip and tell him to go and 'Tax' it at a main Post office and they will sort it out for him. The chances are the new owner knows all this anyway as he has quite a collection of old bikes. I just wanted to get it sorted if I could

Hi Julie,
No expert knowledge on the subject of taxation. I taxed my 1974 CB750 in April after it had been 'SORN' over the winter, paid for 6 months tax at the post office with the intention of applying for 'Historical status' later. 3 weeks later I received a letter and a cheque from the DVLA
explaining the vehicle was 'Historic' and my money paid back...I was taken aback!

The DVLA document I gave the link to above does actually seem useful in telling you what you need to do.
I think I may print a copy and keep it for future reference.
In my case the issue is slightly complicated by having a 1977 bike first registered in 1981 although I have all the dating evidence if
necessary and have been through the process of updating the details with DVLA (although year of manufacture isn't shown on the V5).

In August my bike reached 40 years so I SORNed it with the intention of retaxing it as historic. I should have realised that DVLA aren't as logical as the rest of us so I can't get free tax until January. I was going to sorn it when the weather gets shitty anyway, which isn't far off.

I bought my CB350F about a month ago and it was an American import.
The V5C showed it as first registered in 1976 but there was a note at the bottom of the front page stating that it was manufactured in 1974.
Its taxation class was 'Bicycle' so the RFL would have cost me £35.
I contacted DVLA by phone and enquired about changing the taxation class to 'Historic vehicle' and the very helpful operator said that it could be done at any post office which dealt with car taxation.
I took my V5C to my local post office explaining what I needed and they said that I would need to contact DVLA. When I explained that it was them who sent me to the post office in the first place they got onto their magic computer and carried out the alteration straight away.
I walked out with a receipt for zero payment which apparently doubled as my tax disc and the amended V5C arrived a couple of weeks later.

Sorted this historic Tax thing out, well partly. I taxed it on line this morning, which obviously also took it of SORN. I have just sent the V5C off to DVLA, showing new owners details. DVLA say that the log book will show new taxation class as 'historic' when the new owner receives it and he will be sent a refund of the payment made this morning.
Sounds Ok in theory...............we will wait and see.
