Was the bike ever road registered and if so, do you know the registration number to see if it still exists?  There's a very active motocross club here in Orkney and still start 'em young! - I'll ask around - they travelled all over Scotland (and beyond) but it's a long shot.  If it was a dealer who wanted it for display, many of them have ceased trading I'm afraid.

I don't know what has happened at CWC - I've had fantastic service from them in the past but that incident with the CD175 sloper for Colin (via Stevie) really put me off.  Quite a few have had problems recently and CWC have been far less than helpful.  Hope you get satisfaction Johnny, there's nothing worse than oversized nipples.

Hi Ash,
Thanks for that link, very interesting!

Just for fun I've copied the link to the 3x CBX man here in Orkney - he likes rare stuff with pipes on both sides🤓

Thanks Bryan,
Everything is just about ready for assembly, so I'll get those bits ordered.  Bloody cold in the workshop today but might warm up soon!

Thanks for the link and info chaps, I'm probably mixing HD with cam chains, not primary - another age thing, no doubt.  This is technically a spare engine anyway, although it was the one that came with the bike and appears on the V5c.  Didn't change it in case I ever got round to doing this one and swapping back.

Tried using the search facility without success and unless I dreamt it, someone posted a link to a source of a heavy duty HYVO primary chain (was it for a Kawasaki?). I'm doing my spare 350/4 engine and thought I might try one - not sure why really as a new genuine Honda one will easily see me out!

We don't normally get much here - gulf stream and near the Ocean but my weather app says 2 deg C and feels like minus 16!  Been in the workshop this morning cleaning ride on mower parts in the parts washer - that WAS cold.

Sky looks like there's plenty more where that came from!

The fuel got into the oil from open inlet valve(s) and washed the bore(s).  Does the compression improve after a small squirt of oil down each bore?  If you haven't already started dismantling, it might be worth trying a run - no need to fit all the airbox and stuff for a quick test - just the carbs.

Did you check for any increase in oil level?  It seems a shame to disturb the top end and barrels - quite apart from the expense of seals/gaskets - have you had it running before and if so, was there any suspicion of all not being well?  I would be inclined to change the oil (the missing fuel could have ended up there) remove the plugs and then crank it over for a while until you get oil pressure, refit the carbs and enjoy it!

Hi Ted,
Not dealt with them but apparently they have downsized and no longer break bikes but are still trading.  The demise of the oil industry in Aberdeen has hit many businesses very hard - Ecosse motorcycles, where I bought my Forza and many folk in Orkney bought bikes have gone to the wall.

All the best from a dull but dry and almost windless Orkney!

It goes without saying that you MUST NOT crank the engine, either with the electric or kick starters until you have found the problem - doing so could land you in a whole heap of trouble.  The fuel has only 3 possible routes if the float chamber screws are not leaking, out through the overflows (you have discounted those) upstream back into the plenum chamber (that should have a drain anyway) or downstream through an open inlet valve and into the engine and thence via the rings into the sump oil.
Has the oil level risen in the sump?  Can you smell this missing fuel?

Glad that you are nearly out of the other side Gareth - all the best for getting back to normal.  Hope we can meet up again next year if all the ducks line up.  Perhaps I can venture south on something classic this time (SOHC/4 preferred) instead of the Maxi Scoot - trouble is, it's so damn convenient.

Good shout Bryan,
Certainly Ken and Ted have really been put through the mill this year and my kidney failure is under control with less visits to Aberdeen Royal needed.  We are very fortunate here, still having the dwindling remains of a health service.  Hope '26 is better for all and once we get past the Bah Humbugs, I can start foraging for Easter eggs!

All the very best to one and all

Me too!
Looks like most of the lightly corroded bits - brake unions and the like will respond well to a rub with ACF50 or Bilt Hamber Dynax.  Most of the materials in central heating systems are in the bike as well - I would give that a go and see what comes out on the first flush.  Ash might know better.  Pete Hamber at Bilt Hamber might have some sensible advice and suitable product - he's an industrial chemist and knows his stuff.
Another great project for us all to view instead of Strictly come Baking on Ice!

It is very sad Dave,
Virtually everything made elsewhere to keep profits up but prices high.  I was looking for a replacement jacket recently while I was down in Inverness - not for motorcycling, just everyday wear.  Looked at Berghaus, Helly Hansen and Didricksons - all made in Thailand, Vietnam and one of the 'Stans.  Still priced at £300+ though, made for buttons (pun intended!) and shipped halfway round the World.  It will not improve in my lifetime.
