Bedding new pads in correctly can dramatically improve these old systems. Whilst the 400 isn’t that easy to twin disc the 500/550/750 which use the same setup are. I could lock the front wheel on my 500 if I used it hard. I did find the stainless steel discs suffered with water film and severely impacted braking performance as a result. However this was 30 odd years ago and things might have improved since then.

Quite possibly true Mike. Until it rains that is. Then it's pull and pray time. The other main difference is how it's setup. Brand new it would be ok, as it wore however it got worse, the new ones don't do that due to different design. For it's age it's a ok system, better with another disc fitted though.

Mick is correct. The F and K3 tanks are the same, the 550K1/2 however are the same as the 500K, shorter. Match with the correct seat and like Mick says, they will fit the frame.

I know a member who has a genuine Honda CB550F2 seat with a decent base. The cover is split but that's an easy fix. I'm not sure if he'd be willing to sell or the price he'd want but genuine 550F seats are hens teeth and even rarer with a good base. Pattern seats are well known to have fitment problems BTW.

Surely that points more to the sealing system than to the bearings? I've got another Honda that uses needle rollers in the SA and that is perfect, no water ingress at all. The washers you can see in the kit are also needle rollers as well BTW, they allow the shaft to turn if needed. If your using a central external grease nipple like the 550F has then the entire swinging arm tube should be full of grease including the needle rollers. A couple of squeezes of the grease gun per year should keep everything in good order.
The other problem Grewth is the lack of availability of the internal collar and the cost IF you can find one, plus TBH the 500 SA greasing system is flawed, very easy for it to block up and no grease then gets to the surfaces, hence why the collar and bearings wear so easily.

The bronze bushes are a common fitment on the 500/550s.
As for the collar, you can try and find a new one, difficult, or maybe think about a roller bearing conversion, made by Tourmax iirc. That’s the way I went. You will need to fit a 550 swinging arm pivot bolt if you have a 500 though as the grease nipples won’t work with the Tourmax due to the way it works and the design of the collar on the Tourmax kit.

There were 2 of them Dom. The oil lube diagram and another which iirc was a detailed engine construction diagram. Both of mine came mounted on a heavy hardboard backing with the diagram covered in a film of laminate.
Got mine when the dealership I was working at were throwing them out and I asked if I could have them.
Unfortunately both were wrecked when the garage roof collapsed one year and water got into the backing and just blew it apart. Mine were also in colour btw.
They were about 3ft wide by 2ft deep, each.
