Neat Street - That's a great post, thanks for sharing!  This 350 Panther that I'm involved with was dismantled in 1951 using Bryan's new but well used method and everyone once involved are wearing wooden overcoats!

Hi Johnny,
Yes, it's great to be out and about again - I had a great 100+ miler on Sunday - but only on my new ADV 350 mobility scooter, I think I saw the 550 sulking in the garage as I dragged out the new one! hey, ho, plenty of time for that one later.  I also took the 125 Super Cub for MOT last week - bloody 6 years old now - where did that go?
On a separate not I have some 550 stuff to part with - Yank indicators, fork springs (if I can find them!) and a mate south has just emailed me with a 550 head and some CB 400N carb stuff.  I still have that bank of re-furbished carbs that were on my 550 from James.  500 but jetted 550.  Took some stuff along to that Vintage Club autojumble but didn't see you there.

Thanks Ash, I thought you might respond!  It was on my 72 and I had a really good standard one with it.  That must be over 30 years ago, so it's time someone made good use of it.  The chrome wrap-around band is very good - bet they are near impossible to find. I made a set of those headed, threaded fasteners that hold it on for my 72 - or perhaps my 77?   I'd hate for it to end up in a skip when I do!

Spring cleaning again!  I have a metal based 'Jumbo' seat for 72/77.  I believe they were an option from Honda back in the day.  Wider than standard. Scruffy looking, rusty but not rotten base, cover damaged.  It's quite heavy so postage won't be cheap.  Twenty quid would buy it, plus post.

Ted,
My 550, 400 and 350 fours all have chokes marked 'choke'. However, I have a spare set of 350 carbs and I'm on with fettling them at the moment (in between many other jobs). They have the choke marked 'open'. 350 and 400 have the same carbs (different bank number) and obviously different jetting.

No idea if it was a year change or model change - just another of life's mysteries

I find that the tiny spots more or less disappear over time with ACF 50.  For drying off I use a hot air blower - bloody powerful, just make sure you have a tight hold of the nozzle before you turn it on!

With that level of detail you have provided, perhaps some geek could photoshop what it looked like back then from the many standard pics on the web and you could put the pics on antisocial media in Scotland - might be worth a punt?  Of course, if someone wanted it as a display in an office, they might have had it restored to its former glory before anyone clapped eyes on it.  Unfortunately haystacks and needles spring to mind.
Best of luck,

Was the bike ever road registered and if so, do you know the registration number to see if it still exists?  There's a very active motocross club here in Orkney and still start 'em young! - I'll ask around - they travelled all over Scotland (and beyond) but it's a long shot.  If it was a dealer who wanted it for display, many of them have ceased trading I'm afraid.

I don't know what has happened at CWC - I've had fantastic service from them in the past but that incident with the CD175 sloper for Colin (via Stevie) really put me off.  Quite a few have had problems recently and CWC have been far less than helpful.  Hope you get satisfaction Johnny, there's nothing worse than oversized nipples.

Hi Ash,
Thanks for that link, very interesting!

Just for fun I've copied the link to the 3x CBX man here in Orkney - he likes rare stuff with pipes on both sides🤓

Thanks Bryan,
Everything is just about ready for assembly, so I'll get those bits ordered.  Bloody cold in the workshop today but might warm up soon!

Thanks for the link and info chaps, I'm probably mixing HD with cam chains, not primary - another age thing, no doubt.  This is technically a spare engine anyway, although it was the one that came with the bike and appears on the V5c.  Didn't change it in case I ever got round to doing this one and swapping back.

Tried using the search facility without success and unless I dreamt it, someone posted a link to a source of a heavy duty HYVO primary chain (was it for a Kawasaki?). I'm doing my spare 350/4 engine and thought I might try one - not sure why really as a new genuine Honda one will easily see me out!

We don't normally get much here - gulf stream and near the Ocean but my weather app says 2 deg C and feels like minus 16!  Been in the workshop this morning cleaning ride on mower parts in the parts washer - that WAS cold.

CB500/550 / Re: Fuel draining but carbs not overflowing
« on: December 26, 2025, 08:21:40 PM »
The fuel got into the oil from open inlet valve(s) and washed the bore(s).  Does the compression improve after a small squirt of oil down each bore?  If you haven't already started dismantling, it might be worth trying a run - no need to fit all the airbox and stuff for a quick test - just the carbs.
