Lived every minute of it - mainly local roads initially to iron out a few issues, then a longer run out to the Jack and Jill windmill just north of Brighton.
That sounds like Devil's Dyke James. I used to ride that way for a year when I was commuting from Hove to London each day, nice ride!

....' but there was a truce and basically an amnesty so time to let sleeping dogs'...
Alas, the prime minister has other ideas, in January he moved to open the whole can of worms again. Great day out though....demo's usually are!

I've used it recently but not on my 500/4 and impressed with the results - before and after photos attached.
Hi Martyn I think I'm going to be ordering some then! Thanks for this. BTW... was it hard work?

Has anyone tried this Blue Job chrome polish I've been reading about and can it really clear up the discoloration I'm starting to get on my new header pipes?

Sold a new ural once but the man wanted the posh sidecar not the military one, all sorted EXCEPT chair on wrong side making it an absolute pig to ride!
I'd be one nervous passenger!

Thanks for the answers everyone. Skoti, maybe the diode was broke or missing, the bike was a bit of a heap. Micky, I got a GF later, but the real reason I teamed up with Becky was to exploit a the called the Greater London Mobility Scheme, it was a GLC thing of the day were if there was two of you they would get you a flat quickly, we had both been living in Earls Ct bedsit land. Ted My first bike was an Ariel Arrow too, the trouble is mine was the Airfix! I should have left it in the box, they are worth a lot of money on fleabay, I just checked! Bryan You seem to have answered the question for me, ok so bad timing can cause reversing! Well, I won't be buying any DTs, if I do it will be down to DRINKING!If I want to ride in reverse I'll get myself a Ural outfit.

Many years ago when I was a dispatch rider in the 1980s I had a flat mate, a girl called Becky, also a dispatch rider. She bought herself an aging Yamaha DT175 to take the strain off her haloed CBX550, (or maybe to preserve the cam chain tensioner? ) Well, one morning she started it, went into gear to move off, and....WOW....it went backwards! After a few more reverse starts it behaved itself again. Until it had an electrical fire ( it seemed) one night that caused a fire so hot in her garage it practically melted both bikes. Ok, what on earth might have made it go backwards though?

Oh, and by the way, it is Orkney or the Orkney Isles but never 'the Orkneys'.
OK Ian, I'll go back to school for a term or two!

I rode all the way from east London to west London and back to central London, a staggering distance for someone of 69! This was to take part in the Rolling Thunder Ride 2026, an ex-forces veteran's rally that is also a protest platform against the treatment of certain Northern Ireland veterans like Soldier F by the current government, I even got to meet the shadow defence secretary in Parliament square. My own regiment, the Royal Green Jackets was quiet well represented too, I met some of them at last years ride and the Ace Cafe at times. Boy did we make a lot of noise too. I got interviewed and photographed by a journalist from Reuters, so look out for me! Here's pics.

This was is on the BBC website this morning. Weekly quiz: Why did bananas cause a stir in Orkney? We've got some people on the Orkneys, maybe they can tell us, has it got anything to do yellow CB400Fs?

I’ve noticed as of late a lot of these copper rings are only copper plated steel and aren’t really up to the job, so now I have gone to the aluminium and fibre type, put a magnet to the copper ones if it picks them up they are cheap Chinese fake rings.
I have a magnet, will check, I won't be buying the cheapest!

Thanks for the clarification Bryan. I remember taking some out back in the 80’s on my 400/4 at the time they were made of a white woven material (asbestos?) and were spiral bound with very thin wire. I immediately thought they looked very dodgy and they left fibres in the port.
Like the ones I have then. I mangled the first ones I fitted but succeeded 2nd time, I had ridden a few thousand miles after I bought the bike none the wiser. Okay, next time the pipes come off, copper ones go in! Thanks everyone.

Can anyone tell me if copper exhaust gaskets are an improvement over the originals?
